The event starts and finishes in the village of Hope and is entirely on public rights of way or highway. There are 3 refreshment CP’s, but there are also additional road marshal points and self clips in between some CPs. Highlights of the route:
The route starts with long steady climb out of Hope, up to Bak Tor then along to CP1 just before Lose Hill summit, it’s then back down to the Hope valley into Castelton Village to refreshments at CP2. Next it isup the fearsome Cave Dale and along the Limestone Way to Millers Dale (CP3).
Here the route splits form the Ultra route and you head along the Monsal bike trail. There’s a very long spooky railway tunnel in this section, that was driven through the hill for about half a kilometre. Dare you enter? Not long after the tunnel there is a nasty climb out of the valley and you strike North for Wormhill and then onto Peak Forest (CP4)
Head over fields, then up and over Mam Tor and along the last self-clip at Hollins Cross (CP5/ Ultra CP10). A quad-smashing descet off the ridge leads you down to the road, and then it’s a painful run along the road back to Hope, to glory.
There is around +5000 ft -5000 ft of relief in total. The profile is shown below. It’s a little longer than a marathon by the way… What’s a mile or two extra among friends eh?
The distance and elevation should not be underestimated, You will have to average a little over 3.5mph for the whole course in order to beat the time limits at the CPs. Remember you will be navigating by route description, map and compass at night, and possibly GPS too, so ensure you can do this comfortably.
